The Parts release came about in early 2016. I had started working on trying to compose a series of piano compositions (which would come out as (In/Re)flection around the same time as this release), but was not quite getting the hang of what I wanted to do with it.

While I was in the middle of that work I was added to an event notification on Facebook: The Mystified Remix Project. It was being run by a German netlabel who had started working with Mystified (aka Thomas Jackson Park), a long time member of the Netlabel community. The concept for the project was to produce drone pieces using samples from one of three releases of samples Mystified had posted on his BandCamp site. I was honestly, surprised and flattered to have received the invitation. While I was known to some people in the Netlabel community as a reviewer and supporter of Netlabels, I hadn’t thought that I would be recognized for my works so quickly (it had only been a little over three months since I had put my first two releases out).

I checked out the sample collections on Mystified’s site, and I knew pretty quickly that I could do something that most people wouldn’t do. I knew that I could focus on using the percussion collection because it was the least likely set of samples that anyone would choose to use for creating drone works.

Of course, there was another reason that I knew what I would do would be different: I wouldn’t approach the idea from the typical drone artist’s concept. Instead, I would take the samples, manipulate them to create new samples. Then I would take those new samples, pull them into my DAW of choice (at that time LMMS), and build sequences with them. Overall, the idea was to try to make a drone work that combined elements of minimalism ala Steve Reich.
