Velcro Calliope by Daniel Robert Lahey

Just putting the words “Velcro” and “calliope” together seem like the kind of gibberish type of word play that we’ve come to expect from Daniel Robert Lahey. But sometimes below that gibberish quality, some real potential for meaning can be discovered.

Take the calliope for example. A music instrument that is most often associated with carnivals and circuses, it has the distinction of being infused in many of our childhood memories. But, what to make of the word Velcro? Consider what two pieces of velcro do: they cling tightly to each other. The same way in which many people cling to their fond childhood memories of carnivals and festivals.

Sometimes beneath the gibberish found in Daniel’s titles, there is a more serious intent. A deeper meaning conveyed in words that we might be willing to discard as placeholders intended to label a collection of works as a package.

But, in the case of Velcro Calliope we have a hint of the deeper meaning behind these works: the deeper, fond memories that inspired them.
